Walking / Cycling - Llyn Brenig and Alwen Reservoir

It seems inconceivable to be stuck for something to do in North Wales, but if you happen to find yourself at a loose end, bikes already strapped to the car, and a combination of children/canines becoming restless, then take a spin across the Denbigh Moors to Llyn Brenig where the choices are endless.

I can recommend the 7 mile cycle ride around Alwen reservoir, although there were a few steep hill climbs for younger children, but nothing that a patient parent couldn't handle. The views around the reservoir are spectacular from the peaks, and the winding trails that meander through the pine forests are atmospheric and a real pleasure to the senses. If you bring a picnic, you will probably end up arguing over the best place to stop because at every turn there was another view just as noteworthy as the last one. This route can also be enjoyed just as equally as a walk. There are plenty of marked routes to choose from, including one that skirts around the edge of Llyn Brenig, on foot this can take the best part of 4-5 hours.

Llyn Brenig itself is the much larger of the two reservoirs at 14 miles, this can also be used as a cycle ride, but due to it's size will take much longer, and if you have a dog or children, there is a section at the northern tip that has to be navigated by road if you are on bikes. This is also a beautiful spot for a picnic, or even a leisurely stroll. There are activities here such as fishing and boats can be hired from the visitors center, which also houses toilet facilities and information about local wildlife.
